For service set forth in the following

Citation

For excellent service in the line of his duties as a demolition corporal in a Marine rifle company during operations against the enemy on IWO JIMA, VOLCANO ISLANDS, on 3 March, 1945. In the face of intense enemy mortar, machine gun and rifle fire, Corporal GROSS prepared and supervised the placing of charges used in destroying several enemy positions, thereby enabling his company to overrun a heavily fortified strong point. His conduct throughout was in keeping with highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
