Darvin C. "Dar" Richards, 83, of Hinton, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Darvin C. Richards was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Steen, Minn., the son of Box and Bricky (Casper) Richards. He moved with his family to Hinton as a child and graduated from Hinton High School in 1944. He then served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was stationed in Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

Dar and Mildred Hahn were married Oct. 17, 1946, in Hinton.

Dar worked for the railroad for 13 years, and for the Hinton Hardware store and Tower Construction before starting his own business. He owned and operated the Mobil Service Station in Hinton from 1961 until his retirement in 1988.

He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hinton. He was a member of the American Legion and had served on the Hinton City Council.

Dar enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching sports and stripping copper wire. Over the years, he truly enjoyed spending time with his two grandsons, Matt and Rusty and attending their activities.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mildred of Hinton; one daughter, Kristy Beisner and her husband Ross of Sioux City; onebrother, Donald Richards and his wife Joanne of Hinton; one sister: Darlene Roetman and her husband DeWayne of Pocahontas; two grandsons: Matthew Flannery and his wife Angela, and Rusty Flannery and his wife Kacéy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dick Richards.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, with the Rev. Steven Stoll and the Rev. Ralph Shorey officiating. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery. Graveside military honors were conducted by American Legion Casper Post #477 of Hinton.

Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Chapel in Sioux City.

Pallbearers were Matthew and Rusty Flannery, Ross Beisner, Norman Thoreson, Curt Richards, Joel Roetman, Mike and Rich Richards.
